Key Club conducts Cops ‘N’ Kids book drive

Early childhood development is important for all children. Thats why the Emmaus Key Club organizes its book drive to promote literacy and education.

The book drive ran Dec.7-11, and it involved the entire district in order to donate books to children in need.

By the end of the drive, the Key Club received over 2,000 books. All of the books went to the Cops ‘N’ Kids Childrens Literacy program. Cops ‘N’ Kids has distributed over 683,000 books to kids throughout the Lehigh Valley. Often times these donated books are the first the children will be able to keep on their own.

Lisa Wells, co-advisor of Key Club, said she was ecstatic about the success.

“We can make a difference,” Wells said, “with even as little as a book and you dont even have to spend money to help.”

Key Club has over 100 members and meets in cafe 1 every other Thursday after school till 3:15.The homeroom with the most donated books wins a breakfast party each year that is provided by Key Club. The book drive has taken place annually since 2009 and Wells said the club members love doing it. It all started with a presentation about childhood education and how important it is.

“Beverly Bradley talked to us and inspired us to do book drive.” Wells said. “Its amazing that so many people in elementary schools dont have the simple necessities in life to strive to get a good education.”
