As the lights dim, the classic Disney intro along with the Polynesian song, “Tulou Tagaloa,” echoes throughout the theater. The iconic song marked the beginning of symbolic moments that continued throughout the entire movie. “Moana 2” draws in people of all ages to experience the comedic coming-of-age story.
The first movie showcases Moana completing her mission sent by the ocean to restore the heart of “Te Fiti.” She proves that despite never leaving the island she can sail across the sea. With the help of demigod Maui, who stole the heart, she finds her true passion as a wayfinder and successfully saves her island.
The sequel follows Moana and her search for the lost island of Motu Fetu. The island was created by the gods to connect the people of the ocean, and it’s magical destiny will be only accomplished if she can succeed. With the assistance of a crew filled with new characters and their unique personalities, they must recover Motu Fetu under Moana’s newfound leadership.
The opening song is often identified with the Moana movies, but new masterpieces have emerged that are just as magical. To comfort Moana in disheartening times, the character Maui performs the song “Can I Get a Chee Hoo,” which has an electric beat that gets the listener going. There are also some slower songs for the more intimate moments but the last song, “We Know The Way” closes the movie in an alluring way.
In the film, the audience gets the privilege of meeting a new character, Simea — Moana’s baby sister. The sisters have a close relationship despite their age gap. Moana serves as an excellent role model not only to her sister but to young women. She tries her best to stay positive, but there is an emotional side to her when appropriate. A central message told through Moana’s character arc is that it’s okay to not be okay even in a leadership role. The movie emphasized that it is okay to need help, and that the people you least expect will be there for you.
In addition to the captivating soundtrack, the movie is a masterclass in animation. As time goes on, Disney advances their expertise in animation, allowing “Moana 2” to acquire an updated look. An example of this updated look is Moana’s outfit change from a tank top and long skirt to a traditional outfit from Polynesian culture. This alteration reflects maturity in her character as she takes on the new leadership role.
The creators of “Moana 2” did a superb job at using nostalgia to their advantage. The amount of parallels between songs, characters, and scenery were all perfectly placed. In true Disney fashion, there were some difficult moments, but the group never gave up.
In all, the movie was a heartwarming film that left you wanting more, with catchy songs providing nostalgia from the first movie.
5/5 stars.
