“Zootopia 2” continues with the fascinating story of the unlikely detective pair of Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps. The abundance of exciting surprises, engaging plot, and excellent animation surely make it the second-best Disney animation of all time, after the first “Zootopia” movie, of course. The movie made a fantastic entrance into theaters across the globe, earning $556 million on Thanksgiving weekend according to Reuters.
In this sequel, Nick and Judy officially begin their work as partners in the police force. They must prove to their fellow cops that they weren’t lucky in solving their first case by showing they can work together as a team. When the Climate Wall Journal containing the original architect plans for the city is stolen, Nick and Judy must work together to uncover the thief and restore the journal to its rightful place.
As the story unfolds, the mystery seems to be related to the reptile population, which was exiled from Zootopia years ago. Political enemies try to stand in the way of Judy and Nick’s success, hoping to keep them from uncovering the truth that could tilt the scales of equality between animal groups.
“Zootopia 2” wasn’t just a simple Disney movie made for kids; it was also able to convey more complex themes for viewers. Although Nick and Judy appeared to have overcome their differences by solving a case together in the original “Zootopia”, their clashing personalities continue to be a conflict in this movie.
By addressing issues like prejudice and social advantages establish a correlation between this fantasy journey of two animal detectives and the real world. The directors were able to show characters who weren’t just colorful animals manufactured for kids, but also layered and enriched with deep personality.
The movie did an excellent job of including new characters in this second installment. Lovable characters like Garrett, Pawbert, and Nibbles are all introduced. Although, it felt like some characters from the first movie were featured again for nostalgia rather than having meaningful contributions to the plot. Characters like Clawhauser, Mr. Big, and Flash all make a return, but only for brief moments.
The movie’s brilliant, unique animation style was apparent throughout, especially in the Zootennial Gala scene, which takes place in an ice mansion. The lighting and shadow choices in these scenes added a great touch to the movie, setting the mood and enhancing realism.
In all, “Zootopia 2’s” complex themes and real world connection allow audiences to love the movie, no matter their age.“Zootopia 2” not only served as a good way to continue the “Zootopia” series, but also delivered an entertaining and enthusiastic display that so many of its fans have been waiting for.
4.5/5 stars.
