Whether marching on the worn-down grass of EPSD Stadium or growing leafy basil in Hydroponics Club, Clara Isom has embraced every opportunity that came her way. With a deep love for the environment around her, Isom plans on double-majoring in biosystems engineering and music performance at Michigan State University this fall, carrying the unforgettable experiences she’s made at EHS with her oboe.
In addition to founding the Hydroponics Club and serving as the section leader of the mellophones in the marching band, Isom has also been an active member of brass and wind ensembles, National Honor Society, Art and Tri-M Music Honor Societies. Isom never missed a beat during her time here at EHS, forever carving a path for underclassmen to follow as they remember her as a role model who inspired them.
Stinger: Why did you choose Michigan State?
Isom: Honestly, because of the scholarships they offered me. I got into my dream school, but then, financially, it wasn’t going to work out. Michigan has given me really great financial scholarships, as well as other opportunities that just made it the obvious choice.
Stinger: What inspired you to pursue [biosystems engineering]?
Isom: I always spend a lot of time outside, it’s where I’m happiest. I find it really important to just preserve the Earth, and I’m very connected with it.
Stinger: How has your experience been on The Stinger?
Isom: I really love being able to do political and editorial art through The Stinger, because it’s a different kind of art from most of the stuff I do in art class. I get to apply real-world issues and things that are addressed in my art…I’ve also gotten a lot of awards and recognition through it, and it’s like a way of coping with a difficult political climate through art and advocating for others.
Stinger: What advice would you give to an underclassman?
Isom: I would just say try a lot of new things. Find niche things that you really like and are passionate about. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Find what works best for you.
