Boys soccer defeats Dieruff in first match of the season

In their first game of the brand new season, the Emmaus boys soccer team rolled past Dieruff High School in a two-goal performance by senior Hudson Peck.

The game started off slow for the Hornets, unable to capitalize on some open looks and looking lost against the Husky defense. A couple of key saves were made, and it looked as if the game would go into halftime scoreless. Peck finally opened the scoring, getting one ball into the net as the half expired, giving Emmaus a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw the Hornet offensive open up more opportunities. Senior Jake Hain scored his first goal of the season, and shortly thereafter Peck scored his second of the game. Two big back-to-back saves from senior goalie Edward Zellner prevented a Husky comeback, stopping any moment the opponent had, leaving the final at 3-0.

Off to a very strong start, Peck knew his teammates had to settle down and play their game.

“In the first half we weren’t really playing our game,” Peck said. “Our passing was off and we weren’t really controlling possessions like we should have. I think we just had to calm nerves that the first game always brings. In the second half we were able to move the ball a lot better and we capitalized on some good looks.”

After getting the first one under their belts, Peck is optimistic that this level of success will continue as the year progresses.

“It feels great to get a win for the first game,” Peck said. “It took a lot for us to even have a chance to be out here with everything going on, but we were able to win and hopefully that continues.”

The boys soccer team will play their next game at home on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., once again against Dieruff High School.
