After hours and hours of endlessly scrolling on TikTok and Instagram, a teenager will come across a post that could ultimately change their view on everything involving politics. A dramatic political statement from a favorite music artist could leave a long-lasting impact on any individual who views it.
The term “think before you post” has a whole new meaning once celebrities are brought into the picture.
Celebrities need to be made aware of the power they possess and take responsibility for that political power.
Celebrity activism is becoming a huge part of the world, with both negative and positive consequences, that will ultimately shape teenagers.
According to Yahoo Shopping! in North America 71% of teenagers think it is important to buy from brands they think are cool. Meaning if celebrities are endorsing these brands as well they will get more traction and teenage buyers. If teens will buy a
shoe brand, eat at a restaurant, or listen to a new song that is popularized by their favorite artists. It’s safe to say a celeb’s politics have a potential to as well.
Adolescents are the most susceptible to social influence, and if teenagers see celebrities declare their political party, they may be influenced to lean in that same direction.
Celebrities like Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Cardi B have continuously made public remarks about their stance on political issues.
Most recently, Bad Bunny used his platform during the Super Bowl LIX halftime show to spread his message of “The only thing more
powerful than hate is love.” Bad Bunny did this to further promote his support of the “ICE Out” movement going on
in America.
According to Adolescent Treatment Centers in Newport Academy about 45% of adults in the United States believe celebrities can make a positive difference in social issues. The downside of the constant posting by celebrities is that teenagers may adopt strong political beliefs without truly understanding the claims they stand by. By knowing the celebrity’s political identity, they may be wasting time and energy on ideas that don’t match their true passions.
Additionally, individuals who choose a political side should be well-versed and educated in those political stances. Social media, is used as an outlet to spread all types of misinformation, varying from white lies to detrimental details. Sometimes, the idea of posts going viral demolishes the idea of the truth being spread.
Celebrity involvement in a cause casts a spotlight on issues young people otherwise might not know about. One such cause is the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation a lesser-known organization set out to create a sustainable future for planet Earth. After seeing DiCaprio’s name associated with this issue, not only teenagers but all fans are exposed to this cause and want to learn more and continue to research.
Celebrity engagement can also encourage young people to get involved in politics and protest, something that is sorely needed in this world. This consistent collaboration from celebrities encourages citizens to participate in elections and use their right to protest when disagreeing with government decisions.
In 2018, Taylor Swift made her first political statement, criticizing Tennessee Republican Senate candidate Marsha Blackburn, offering her support to Democratic candidates Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper.
Viewing information on social media that teenagers have never heard of can encourage fact-checking and discovering new information. This new information can also lead to student-led conversations followed by possible solutions, opening the door to growth in critical thinking skills outside of what students learn in the classroom.
Next time a ground breaking political moment occurs, celebrities take a longer pause while hovering over that “Post” button. They will double check the information they are posting because the smallest change will affect the teenage population.
