Pho•Nominal is a Vietnamese restaurant that opened shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. Family members and close friends operate the restaurant, all of whom stepped in when staffing became a prominent issue during the pandemic.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the restaurant began as a takeout-only business and later transitioned into a limited-seating dining area with social distancing put in place. Despite these initial challenges, the restaurant continued growing and was continually supported by the local community.
Giving the restaurant an authentic feel, the menu reflects the foods that they grew up eating and the staff primarily consists of first-generation immigrants. The central focus of the menu is traditional Vietnamese dishes, created in an authentic manner, as the recipes are passed down from generation to generation.
“We were first-generation immigrants, so everything is as authentic as you are going to get,” said Phu Tran, owner of Pho•Nominal.
Pho•Nominal is best known for its pho, with brisket, beef ball, and steak being the most popular dishes on the menu. Appetizers, such as spring rolls, summer rolls, and chicken wings, are also commonly ordered menu items. Other menu favorites include the beef carpaccio, the pho special, and the
banh mi sandwiches, which are served on a baguette and are a popular choice for many customers.
The pho brings a warm comfort, a light meal, and an array of flavors, with a selection of toppings, such as bean sprouts, lime, and thai basil paired with the filling soup base that you can season to your own liking. Employees describe the work environment as a place where they are able to connect with the staff,
as well as the customers. Being able to work closely with people of similar cultural backgrounds allow for stronger relationships and better communication.
Pho•Nominal continues to operate as a family-oriented business where everyone pitches in and helps out. It remains a steady part of the local food scene, offering authentic Vietnamese cuisine in a welcoming and comfortable environment.
