Lockers, something that used to be a crucial component of the school day, are now being used less and less. Although there are some students who still enjoy them, many students, including some who have them, find lockers to be unnecessary and burdensome.
In order to be assigned a locker, students must sign up in their “Class Of…” Schoology page. However, whether it is because they have access to a sports locker or they just don’t have time to get to one on a different floor, there are very few students who request lockers.
According to administrative assistant Mrs. Walls, lockers are becoming quite uncommon, and the amount of students signing up for them is steadily decreasing.
“Not many [students sign up] at all. We probably have about 100 or so this year,” Walls said.
Freshman Liem O’Neill is a perfect example of this point. He does not have an assigned school locker; however, he has an alternative way to store his belongings to help with his time management and organization.
“I can use my football locker. I’d say my locker room is more convenient because I’m there more often, and it’s also more convenient because I don’t have to stop in the hallway and waste time on the way to class,” O’Neill said.
According to O’Neill, many students use locker rooms rather than lockers in the school because they are easier to access and students are often in the locker rooms anyway. However, there are some students who still use lockers. Sophomore Kate Brion uses her locker frequently and finds it helpful.
“I’m able to store my stuff in [my locker] without having to worry it’s going to get stolen,” Brion said. “Also, my back is less sore now because I don’t have to carry all my books and folders in [my backpack].”
While lockers can be an easy way to organize items, they can also be bothersome because some students have to travel to access their lockers during the school day. Though senior Albianny Conce appreciates her locker, she does have some grievances.
“It’s on the third floor, and almost all my classes are on the second and first floor,” Conce said.
Social studies teacher Mr. Brown acknowledges that it could be difficult for students to use lockers during the school day.
“If we had a smaller footprint, it would be way easier to have a locker,” Brown said. “So I think we understand that the size of the school makes it difficult for students to go to lockers each block.”
