As poll day for the new Lower Macungie Township Commissioners approaches, the decision of who will fill the empty seats on the board is left in the hands of the citizens. Three of the five current Lower Macungie Township Commissioners’ terms are concluding this year. Six candidates were selected during a primary election that occurred in May, consisting of Republican candidates Matthew Guglielmello, Brian Higgins, and Brian Shoemaker, as well as Democratic candidates Wesley Barrett, Melissa Bosak, and Stephanie Rafes.
Prior to 2008, Lower Macungie did not have a Board of Commissioners, as it was a Second Class Township. When the Second Class Township converted into a First Class Township, the Lower Macungie Township Board of Three Supervisors was converted into the Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners.
There have not been any Democrats elected for the Lower Macungie Township Board of 3 Supervisors since 1964, and there has not been a Democrat on the Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners as of now.
The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 20, the deadline to apply for mail-in or absentee ballots is Oct. 28, all ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Nov. 4. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the day of the election.
